President & CEO
Patrick L. Pope graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and earned a master’s degree in Business Administration in 1995. He joined NPPD in December 1979 as an Electrical Engineer and has also held the positions of Distribution Planning Engineer, District Operations Superintendent, Regional Operations Superintendent, Regional Manager, Energy Control Center Manager and Vice President of Transmission Services. He was appointed Vice President of Energy Delivery in October of 2003. In November of 2004, Mr. Pope was named Vice President of Energy Supply. In January of 2008 he was appointed Vice President & Chief Operating Officer. In April of 2011, he was appointed President & CEO. Pat is a member of The Energy Authority Board of Directors, is a member of LPPC’s CEO Steering Committee, the CEO sponsor of the LPPC Environmental Task Force, and is the Executive Sponsor for AFFORD (Alliance for Fuel Options, Reliability and Diversity). Mr. Pope serves on the boards of the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Columbus area Chamber of Commerce and the Columbus Airport Board of Commissioners. Pat and his wife Jackie have three grown children and seven grandchildren and live in Columbus.
General Manager of Retail
Timothy J. Arlt, General Manager of Retail has over 35 years experience in the Public Power Utility Industry. He has spent 7 years in the Nuclear Division and 28 years in Operations area including management assignments in System Control, Customer Account Management, Transmission & Distribution Operations, and Energy Accounting & reporting. He holds the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) System Operator Certification in Reliability Function and the Certified Key Account Executive (CKAE) from National Rural Electric Corporation Association (NRECA). He is a past member of the NERC Member Representatives Committee (MRC) Committee which is the Industry key stakeholder voice to the NERC Board of Trustees.Mr. Arlt is accountable for the overall strategic direction, leadership, and performance of NPPD’s Retail Business Unit. He is responsible for customer and stakeholder relationships, Retail Business/Workforce processes, Retail financial strength, Retail sustainability and growth, and technical innovation.He holds a master’s degree in Business Administration from Wayne State College, a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Concordia College and an associate of applied science degree from Southeast Community College.
Vice President & Chief Financial Officer
Ms. Bender joined NPPD in 1990 as Supervisor of Technical Accounting. She has also held the positions of District Manager, Rate Supervisor, Finance & Accounting Manager, Assistant Treasurer and Corporate Planning & Risk Manager. Ms. Bender graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting and earned a master’s degree in Business Administration-Finance & Accounting from Regis University in 2006.
Vice President Customer and Corporate Services
Ken Curry graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He also earned a master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska in 1990. Mr. Curry was appointed to the position of Vice President of Customer Services in August, 2011, and in March, 2016 his role was expanded to include Corporate Services. Ken is responsible for leading and overseeing NPPD in the areas of safety, customer relations, economic development, account management, contracts, sustainable energy, human resources, and diversity and inclusion. Ken is a registered Professional Engineer, a Certified Energy Manager, a Certified Key Account Executive, LEED Accredited Professional, Palladium Kaplan-Norton Balanced Scorecard Certified Graduate, and was previously certified as a Six Sigma Black Belt and Lean Leader through BD Medical. Ken is involved in community events, currently serving on the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce Board, United Way Board, Habitat for Humanity Board, fundraising committee for the Columbus Area Future Fund and a Rotarian. He served on the Columbus Public School Board for 10 years, served on many community / church boards and is a three time mentor with the Teammates program. Ken is actively involved in his church and with family enjoying outdoor activities. Ken is an Eagle Scout and strong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America program and currently serves as the District Chairman.
Vice President & Chief Nuclear Officer
John Dent is the Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer for Nebraska Public Power District’s Cooper Nuclear Station effective July 9, 2017. Mr. Dent graduated from Widener University with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering in 1995. He earned his senior reactor operator license at Seabrook Station and completed the INPO Senior Nuclear Plant Managers Course. Before joining Cooper, He was the Site Vice President at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station. Before that he served as Pilgrim’s General Manager Plant Operations. He was also Fleet Operations Support General Manager at Entergy Nuclear headquarters in Jackson, Mississippi.
He has held key leadership positions with Exelon and Florida Power and Light in plant management, maintenance, operations, engineering, work management and outages services. He has more than 30 years of commercial nuclear power experience. While a part of the management of Cooper Nuclear Station, Mr. Dent is still employed by Entergy Nuclear Nebraska, LLC (“Entergy”) under the Support Services agreement between the District and Entergy.
Director of Research
Alan L. Dostal is the Director of Research for Nebraska Public Power District. He has been employed by NPPD for 37 years and was responsible for certain planning, budgeting, contracting, financing, and other corporate nuclear related activities for Cooper Nuclear Station. Currently he is responsible for leading NPPD’s Domestic Energy Research and Application initiative. One of the key elements of this initiative was the establishment of the Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research with the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.A 1974 graduate of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln with a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management, Mr. Dostal joined NPPD in March 1979 as a Generation Engineering Scheduler in the Power Projects Division. His nuclear power career began in 1986 when he became Nuclear Planning Supervisor for Cooper Nuclear Station. After earning his Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska–Kearney in 1989, he became manager of nuclear planning and budgeting in 1990. More recently he retired from the position of Corporate Nuclear Business Manager. He was assigned responsibility for the Domestic Energy Research and Application Initiative in September 2005. He is also NPPD’s Manager of EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute) Technology Transfer and serves as a member of EPRI’s Research Advisory Committee.
Vice President & Chief Operating Officer
Thomas J. (Tom) Kent assumed the position of Vice President and Chief Operating Officer on May 1, 2011. Mr. Kent is responsible for strategic leadership, operation, and performance of NPPD’s non-nuclear assets, including power plants, transmission, and distribution facilities. Mr. Kent has over 23 years of electric utility experience. Tom joined Nebraska Public Power District in 1990 as the Environmental Qualification Coordinator at Cooper Nuclear Station. Tom’s contributions to NPPD’s electrical, instrumentation, and control engineering division at Cooper Nuclear Station earned him the management position of District Manager in 1994 and then Regional Manager in 1996 for NPPD’s Retail Division. Tom was selected as Retail Customer Care Manager in 1999. His leadership played an instrumental role in improving NPPD’s customer service by implementing a new billing system and constructing NPPD’s Centralized Call Center. Tom was appointed as NPPD’s first Chief Information Officer in November of 2001. In 2005, Tom returned to Cooper Nuclear Station as Project Manager for two strategic business projects. Tom then became NPPD’s Corporate Planning & Risk Manager in October of 2006, where he was responsible for completing NPPD’s Integrated Resource Plan. On April 1, 2008, Tom became the District’s Transmission & Distribution Manager and was responsible for the overall management and oversight of NPPD’s transmission and distribution assets. Mr. Kent holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Mr. Kent also spent four years on active duty as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Kent attended and successfully completed the Reactor Technology Course for Utility Executives at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in June 2012.
Director of Nuclear Oversight
David Kimball is the Director of Nuclear Oversight for Nebraska Public Power District’s (NPPD) Cooper Nuclear Station. He started his career at Cooper Nuclear Station on March 1, 1988, achieving 30 years of nuclear experience. David has served the District in multiple positions but most recently as the Director of Asset and Project Management at the corporate headquarters in Columbus, Neb., having responsibilities for all district assets, capital improvement plans, work management, the districts inventory and overall project performance. Kimball climbed the ranks at CNS starting as a Radiation Protection Technician, then spending several years in Radiological Management, Outage Manager and finally worked as the station’s Production Manager, prior to moving to corporate in 2008. He returned to site full time on November 17, 2014, as the Director of Nuclear Oversight. David received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics and Education in December of 1987.
Vice President Government Affairs & General Counsel
Mr. McClure joined NPPD in 1980 with undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Nebraska. During his 37-year career he has held numerous senior level positions at the utility including interim President and CEO. Currently, legal affairs, state and federal government relations, environmental, corporate communications and water policy report to him. McClure has testified frequently before committees of the Nebraska Unicameral and has also testified before subcommittees of the U.S. House of Representatives. McClure serves on industry boards and committees at the state and national level. Regionally, he is a member of the Corporate Governance Committee of the Southwest Power Pool which operates the transmission grid and the real time energy market in all or parts of 14 states throughout the Central Plains, including all of Nebraska.
Chief Audit and Ethics Officer
Conrad Saltzgaber graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney with a bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration with a double emphasis in Accounting and Finance. He joined NPPD in 2015 as the Chief Audit and Ethics Officer. Conrad has over ten years of experience in auditing and is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Internal Auditor, and Certified Financial Services Auditor.
Corporate Communications & Public Relations Manager
Jeanne Schieffer is the Corporate Communications and Public Relations Manager for the Nebraska Public Power District. She has worked in communications since she joined NPPD in 1995. Prior to her career with NPPD, she was a secondary English teacher. The Corporate Communications Department is responsible for communicating NPPD’s position on energy-related issues related to NPPD’s operations and nuclear generation, public power and end-use customer services, as well as environmental, energy education, and energy efficiency topics. Ms. Schieffer oversees a team of professional communicators assigned to provide employee, retiree and customer communications; corporate reputation and community outreach; and corporate media and media services. Ms. Schieffer graduated from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D. in 1986 with a Bachelor’s degree in fine arts. She earned a Master of Arts from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 2007. She is married, has two daughters, and resides in Columbus, Neb., where the utility’s headquarters are located.
