Our game plan for Nebraska’s energy future

Our game plan for Nebraska’s energy future
February 12, 2026

If you’ve been watching Nebraska basketball this season, you know success is just as much about strategy as talent. Every play is intentional, every teammate knows their role, and that’s what wins games. It’s how I think about our work at NPPD. Our success takes a plan, teamwork and a whole lot of heart.

The three-year Strategic Plan we recently updated is our playbook. It’s how we set goals, track progress and make sure we have the right momentum – my 2026 Word of the Year – to power Nebraska not just today, but for decades to come. When I look at this plan, I see more than charts and objectives. I see the thriving future of our communities, farms, businesses and families.

A few months ago, I stood within the reactor building of Cooper Nuclear Station – a facility that powers thousands of homes and businesses across Nebraska. Seeing this impressive display of power reminded me of the responsibility we carry. Because of our diverse generation mix, entire communities light up. Hospitals run. Schools stay warm. Businesses prosper. That’s not a small-town game. It’s the big leagues. As such, it requires a great amount of foresight and accountability.

Electricity demand is rising across Nebraska and the nation, and when these challenges rise, we rise up to meet it. Growth means more jobs, more innovation and more ways to serve you better. But to win, we need to plan smart and execute seamlessly.

Our guiding principle is clear: to provide best-quartile rates while maintaining reliability and resiliency, pursue decarbonization goals and strengthen long-term customer relationships. That’s our version of “play tough defense and take the good shots.”

We’re running the court with what we call our five strategic priorities:

  • Enhancing the Customer Experience
Fans matter. For us, that means putting customers first with smarter services, better communication and long-term value that grows with them, and with Nebraska.
  • Managing Carbon Risk and Resource Adequacy
You can’t win without depth on the bench. We’re expanding our generation portfolio to meet growing demand while staying true to sustainability goals. Reliability is non-negotiable.
  • Cost Competitiveness
Championship teams manage the clock and the scoreboard. We’re doing the same with strategic financial planning to keep rates affordable.
  • Enhancing the Teammate Experience
Behind every great play is a great team. We’re investing in our people by creating a culture of excellence and innovation that empowers every teammate to lead.
  • Transform and Innovate
Basketball evolves, and so does energy. We’re leveraging new tools, data and ideas to work smarter and faster, adding to our momentum.

Foundational to our strategic plan is our mission to safely generate and deliver reliable, low-cost, sustainable energy and outstanding service, and our vision to be a premier energy provider, powering everyday life and a brighter future for Nebraska.

The future isn’t waiting, and neither are we. Like a team chasing a championship, we’re committed to everyday excellence. We’re not standing still. We’re lighting the path forward, together, because when Nebraska wins, we all win. And at NPPD, we’re playing to win for you, for your family, and for the future of our state.
