Scam payment attempts being made on NPPD customers

Columbus, Neb. – An individual stating that they are with ‘the electric utility,’ have been contacting Norfolk and Kearney customers of Nebraska Public Power District in an apparent scam attempt.

The caller claims that they are collecting for a past due amount on an electric bill, or that there was no signature on the check for a recent payment that did not clear the bank. The caller asks for the payment to be made immediately over the phone with a credit card. As a policy, NPPD will not ask for a debit or credit card number.

Any customers that receive such a call should not attempt to make any payment and contact NPPD’s Centralized Customer Care Center at 1-877-ASK-NPPD (877-275-6773) to report the request.

Customers are also encouraged to contact local law enforcement about any suspicious calls demanding immediate payment of their electric bill.
