Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS NPPD’S GREEN CLUB?
It’s a program offered by NPPD where customers can subscribe to purchase renewable energy or “green power”. When you sign up for this program you are purchasing energy generated from Nebraska-based renewable sources.
WHAT IS RENEWABLE ENERGY OR GREEN POWER?
Today’s renewable energy or green power consists of electricity generated from natural resources such as wind, sun, and methane gas released from landfills. Power that comes from renewable resources is limitless and clean. The best part is green power does not add pollution to the atmosphere.
WHY IS NPPD OFFERING THIS GREEN CLUB PROGRAM NOW?
Customer research has indicated an increased interest in recent years for renewable energy generation resources, both nationally and here in Nebraska. The Green Club Program for NPPD’s retail customers is designed to provide an easy method for our customers to assist in supporting these types of projects, above and beyond NPPD’s normal investment in generation resources.
HOW DO CUSTOMERS BENEFIT FROM JOINING THE GREEN CLUB PROGRAM?
- Provides an opportunity to support renewable energy generation from Nebraska-based facilities by purchasing blocks of renewable power (green energy) and assisting in the investment for this type of energy generation.
- By participating customers will know they are helping to maintain the environment through their support of renewable, non-carbon emitting generation and will help enhance the quality of life for Nebraskans through a cleaner environment.
HOW DOES NPPD BENEFIT BY OFFERING THE GREEN CLUB PROGRAM?
- Provides a renewable product opportunity that customers have been asking for.
- Assists in defraying the cost of renewable energy within the NPPD portfolio.
- Further establishes NPPD as a supporter of renewable resources among its entire customer base.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO JOIN NPPD’S GREEN CLUB?
Green energy is sold to customers in 100 kilowatt hour (kWh) blocks per month for a period of time that the customer decides – could be for one month or remain continuously on the program. For a residential customer, 100 kWh corresponds to roughly 10 percent of an average monthly bill. Customers can choose to purchase as many blocks as they wish, which is added to a customer’s monthly power bill. (There may be sales tax and other bill adjustments applicable to this charge.) View Green Energy Rate Schedule.
WHY DOES GREEN ENERGY COST MORE?
Although renewable energy resources like the sun and wind are free fuel sources, the total cost to NPPD for green energy is currently more expensive than the cost of energy produced from NPPD’s traditional power generation resources, such as nuclear or coal-fired power plants. Additionally, renewable energy resources are intermittent (not always available). The wind does not always blow and the sun does not always shine. In contrast, nuclear and coal-fired power plants typically operate continuously and are more readily available to customers, which has a tendency to lower the cost per kWh produced by these types of generation resources.
WHERE DOES MY MONEY GO WHEN I SIGN UP FOR NPPD’S GREEN CLUB PROGRAM?
The Green Club program does not earmark funds for future wind development. In fact, NPPD does not pre-collect revenues for the future development of any generation source. Rather, the Green Club program promotes customer support of existing wind generation.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE?
All NPPD retail customers are eligible to participate. A retail customer is one who receives their monthly electric bill from NPPD. If you are interested in this program but do not receive your monthly electric bill from NPPD, contact your local electric provider to see if they have a similar program.
HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR NPPD’S GREEN CLUB?
Existing Nebraska Public Power District residential, commercial, or industrial customers may sign up for the Green Club via NPPD’s Customer Service Request; new customers can sign up via NPPD’s New Customer Service Request. You may also call us at 1-877-ASK-NPPD (275-6773) or visit any of our customer service centers.
WHEN CAN I GET STARTED IN THE GREEN CLUB?
NPPD retail customers can enroll in the Green Club anytime.
IF I HAVE SIGNED UP FOR BUDGET BILLING, HOW WILL THE GREEN CLUB CHARGE AFFECT MY BILL?
Joining the Green Club will not interfere with budget billing. Budget billing is based on energy charges applicable under the customer’s applicable base energy rate. The green energy charge will be applied as a surcharge above the customer’s budget bill.
IS MY PURCHASE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY THROUGH THE GREEN CLUB PROGRAM TAX DEDUCTIBLE?
No. Even though you may be voluntarily purchasing renewable energy through the Green Club Program, it is not a charitable contribution and therefore is not tax deductible.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I SIGN UP FOR THE PROGRAM AND LATER CHANGE MY MIND?
No problem. Retail customers can unsubscribe at any time and charges will be discontinued at the end of their current billing period.
HOW DOES GREEN ENERGY BENEFIT THE ENVIRONMENT?
Substituting renewable generation for traditional generation helps to reduce overall emissions from electricity generation.
HOW WILL BUYING GREEN ENERGY HELP MY BUSINESS?
Participation in NPPD’s Green Energy Program sends a message about how much you, as an electric consumer, care about the environment. It also says you are willing to commit your resources to positive action. Businesses that participate in the Green Energy Program can improve customer relations, enhance their corporate image and can positively impact the community in which they operate.
WHY SHOULD I CONTRIBUTE WHEN MY NEIGHBOR MIGHT NOT?
Nebraska Public Power District’s Green Club gives you the opportunity to take an active role in improving the environment. Everyone who participates makes a difference.
DOES THE RENEWABLE ENERGY I PURCHASE COME DIRECTLY TO MY HOUSE?
Due to the way electricity is transmitted and distributed, energy purchased or produced from renewable energy resources mix with other generation sources on our electric grid and may not be specifically delivered to you. However, the renewable energy you purchase will be added to the power grid and will displace incremental power that would have otherwise been produced from traditional generating resources.
