Welcome to the premiere issue of Energy Insight! This name edged out NPPD Grid by just two votes in a naming contest for the new magazine by NPPD employees and customers.
Energy Insight is a combination of NPPD’s monthly employee publication NPPD INsight and our bi-monthly wholesale customer newsletter, Interchange. The new, four-color magazine will be published on a bi-monthly basis for NPPD’s employees, retirees and wholesale and retail municipal customers.
Thanks to all who participated in focus groups to determine the overall format and structure of the new magazine as well as everyone who helped give it its official name. With the magazine format, it is our goal that there will be something in this magazine for everyone. If you have a story idea or want to comment on the publication, feel free to contact Energy Insight’s managing editor Jill Novicki. Until next time…happy reading!
What keeps you awake at night? For me, it is the potential impact and costs related to Climate Change initiatives and other environmental regulations. Nearly every day, we read or hear new reports of power plant projects delayed due to environmental concerns, or what a particular business or industry is doing to “go green.” The enhanced public interest and involvement in our nation’s energy strategy has placed more political and regulatory pressure on the energy industry to produce cleaner and more efficient power than ever before.
In mid-March, NPPD announced the execution of a 20-year power purchase agreement with Midwest Wind Energy, LLC and its affiliate Elkhorn Ridge Wind, LLC for an 80-megawatt wind energy project to be located at Bloomfield in Knox County.
The facility, to be constructed by the end of 2008, is expected to produce an amount of energy equivalent to the amount of electricity used by approximately 25,000 Nebraska residences in a year.
In mid-March, NPPD announced that it reached a 20-year power purchase agreement with Midwest Wind Energy facility that will pave the way for construction of Nebraska’s largest wind farm near Bloomfield.
Dave Rich, NPPD’s renewable energy development manager, recently sat down with Energy Insight and discussed some of the most frequently asked questions regarding this project.
NPPD reached out to Nebraskans during February and March in a series of public meetings held across the state presenting NPPD’s Integrated Resources Plan, which outlines the potential future mix of resources for the generation of electricity through 2027.
“We felt that the IRP was well received,” said Tom Kent, Resource Planning and Risk Manager. “The turnout was better than we had hoped for and we had some very good dialogue during the meetings.” Held in Kearney, Lincoln, Scottsbluff, Norfolk, and North Platte, some 60 customers attended the evening meetings and another 40 signed up for information and gave input through a special IRP website.
How might a radio sports announcer approach the birth of his child? Does he stand at the head of his wife’s hospital bed and utter small encouraging phrases? “Good, honey. You’re doing great. Good job.” Or does a small portion of his brain slip into play-by-play?
Keep that thought in mind while we tell you a little bit more about that radio announcer. Before joining NPPD, York Human Resources Representative Dallas Beshaler used to be a radio sports play-by-play announcer.
