Non-Licensed Nuclear Plant Operator

Nebraska Public Power District has an immediate opening for a Non-Licensed Nuclear Plant Operator located at Cooper Nuclear Station near Brownville, Nebraska.

NAVY NUCLEAR BACKGROUND PREFERRED

APPLICANTS CHOSEN FOR INTERVIEWS MUST PASS A POSS (Plant Operator Selection System) TEST.

Operate and monitor all electrical and mechanical plant equipment. Ensure that all equipment is operated safely and in a manner that will guarantee continuous operation even in the event of an abnormal or emergency situation.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Monitor and operate equipment assigned to Turbine Building, Watch Station.
  • Monitor and operate equipment assigned to Reactor Building, Watch Station.
  • Monitor and operate equipment assigned to the Radwaste Building, Augmented Off Gas Building, and Outside Watch Station.
  • Perform refueling operations, maintenance activities, and testing during refueling outages.
  • Tag out equipment for maintenance and restore equipment to operations, perform surveillance testing of systems and equipment, and perform systems valve lineups.
  • Attend continuous Non-Licensed Nuclear Plant Operator requalification training and satisfactorily complete associated exams. Maintain qualification as a Fire Brigade Leader and switch person.
  • Other duties: respond to fires or fire drills as a fire brigade member or fire brigade leader; perform duties of the on-shift communicator during emergencies and drills; perform quality control inspector functions; respond to abnormal or emergency conditions and administer first-aid or CPR to injured persons; responsible for providing on-the-job training for new operators training to become a certified Non-Licensed Nuclear Plant Operator; must live within 45 minutes of CNS to satisfy Emergency Plan requirements. NLNPO required to work rotating shifts.
  • Incumbent is accountable for miscellaneous other responsibilities as assigned or required.

Education and Training:

A high school diploma required (AND) Nuclear Navy experience (highly preferred)

(OR)

High School Diploma required (AND) Experience in the operation of either heavy equipment or complex manufacturing processes that demonstrates manual dexterity (AND) Commensurate amount of higher level education.

Prior Related Experience:

Previous experience requirements are per Item A above. Must meet requirements of ANSI N-18.1-1971, Section 4.5.1. (Documentation of qualifications is a condition of employment.)

Competencies That Should Be Demonstrated:

  • Knowledge of system components and understanding how they work.
  • Knowledge of fire fighting techniques including radiological fires.
  • Knowledge of radiation and contamination safe work habits.
  • Knowledge of systems and how they interrelate with other systems.
  • Ability to communicate clearly.
  • Ability to exercise immediate judgment during equipment malfunctions.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts.
  • Ability to perform analytical troubleshooting.
