‘It’s Easy Bein’ Green’: NPPD looking for creative student ideas in annual video competition

January 25, 2013

Columbus, Neb. – What is a great way to emphasize energy efficiency in a home? What is a great example of conserving energy? How could a student, or group of students, promote such a message in their community?

High school and junior high school students can answer those questions and more by participating in Nebraska Public Power District’s annual “It’s Easy Bein’ Green” video competition. This annual competition challenges student teams to create an ingenious, 27-second message about energy efficiency. NPPD, together with its wholesale partner utilities, is once again sponsoring this energy efficiency video contest.

The video contest gives students the opportunity to learn the importance of conserving energy, build awareness about energy-wasting habits, and promote energy-saving alternatives. Last year’s competition saw more than 40 videos submitted to NPPD, with Chambers High School taking top honors followed by David City High School.

Energy efficiency and conservation continue to be important parts of NPPD’s long-term strategy to meet its customers’ growing energy needs.

“We know the cheapest and greenest kilowatt is the one we do not use. NPPD’s wants younger generations to know and understand the importance of energy efficiency and energy conservation,” stated Chad Johnson, NPPD’s community relations and education specialist. “We are looking for creative ideas on video from students to convey that message.”

The contest is open to Nebraska students in grades seven through 12 in communities served by NPPD and its wholesale utility partners. Entries must be submitted by a school sponsor, be exactly 27 seconds in length, and should focus on creative and unique energy-saving ideas for the home, school, farm, or business. In order to be considered, entries must be submitted by April 5, 2013, via NPPD’s website at http://www.nppd.com/videochallenge/.

All qualifying entries will be posted on www.nppd.com and on a special YouTube channel. For the ‘Creative Video Award,’ a panel of energy industry experts will select the top three video winners. First place will receive an Apple iPad2, along with prizes for team members involved in the submission. The video with the most views on YouTube will receive special recognition as the “Popular Video” and receive certificates of recognition.

The winning schools and students may be featured in NPPD news releases, social media sites online, and through other publicity media by NPPD. Additionally, the selected commercials could be considered for professional production and possible placement in a statewide media campaign in 2013. Winning schools will be notified by 5 p.m. April 9, 2013.

“It’s Easy Bein’ Green!” video contest is sponsored, in part, by NPPD’s EnergyWise efficiency incentives program, which offers incentives to homeowners, businesses, and agriculture, and by NPPD’s GreenSchools program, an environmental service-learning program that inspires students to take personal responsibility for improving the environment at their school, at home, and in their community.
