Mock–up of Cooper Nuclear Station drywell open to the public next Thursday in Stella

August 30, 2012

Brownville, Neb. – Nebraska Public Power District’s Cooper Nuclear Station (CNS) will host an open house for the public from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6 at its recently completed, drywell mock-up at the old Stella school, located at 71829 642 Blvd., in Stella, Neb.

The mock-up is a 1-to-1 representation of a quarter section of the plant’s drywell, the section of the plant housing the reactor. The actual drywell is only accessible when the plant is in an outage, and is a rare opportunity for many CNS employees to enter.

The mock-up was built to allow crews to safely rehearse work activities scheduled for the upcoming fall refueling outage. The replacement of four fan coil units – equipment used for cooling the drywell – will occur when Cooper undergoes its outage. Attendees to the open house will have an opportunity to see just how large and complex the work will be during the upcoming refueling outage.

More information on the mock-up and the scope of the work is available through a video tour on NPPD’s Facebook page and at NPPD.com.
