Columbus, Neb.– Adding to its LEED® Gold certification, NPPD’s new Norfolk Operations Center is also, now, an official award winner. On the state level, the NOC and HDR Engineering – the facility’s design and engineering consultant – received an Honor Award on Feb. 22 at the American Council of Engineering Companies/Nebraska 2011 Engineer Excellence Awards banquet. The Honor Award is one of the top two awards presented by ACEC/Nebraska. Entries were judged on such factors as uniqueness, sustainability and complexity.
The NOC has also been cited as recipient of a National Recognition Award. This award will be presented to NPPD and HDR at the American Council of Engineering Companies 2011 Engineering in Excellence Awards at the EEA Gala awards program on Friday, April 1, in Washington, D.C. The National Recognition Award is a prestigious distinction honoring projects that do not earn an Honor or Grand Award on the national level, “but nonetheless demonstrate exceptional achievement in engineering,” said David A. Raymond ACEC President and CEO.
“Awards are gratifying,” said Ed Wagner, vice president of customer services. “They mean others recognize just how good of a job so many people did in the planning, design and construction of the NOC. What I think is equally or even more important, though, is the NOC allows us to serve customers in an exceptional way. With the NOC, we have enhanced service, increased efficiencies, added a cutting-edge public education component to the area and championed environmental stewardship. To use a baseball analogy, that’s pretty much a home run.”
In its award entry, HDR stated: “HDR worked in collaboration with NPPD to create a cutting-edge facility that will highlight advances in renewable energy technologies. From conceptual planning to architectural design, integration of renewable energy components and landscape design, HDR provided … key services for this new $20 million facility. The result is a building that is both functional and stunning that NPPD is already using to ‘practice what it preaches’ when it comes to sustainable energy usage.”
The NOC houses NPPD’s regional transmission and distribution crews, materials storage and customer service. In addition, one of the NOC’s highlights, central to the building’s lobby, is an interactive educational kiosk that provides a range of energy-related information.
The ACEC/Nebraska awards banquet coincides with National Engineers’ Week, Feb. 20-26.
